Press Release
The foundations of Koyama's work begins with the concept of the Möbius Loop. The structure of the loop has no "sides", and the front and back, i.e. the shape and surface are twisted over each other. As the connotative space goes round once within itself and returns to the starting point, it always arrives at the "outer" side. This can be seen as a mirror reflection of the original state, where the real and virtual constantly intertwine. With this in mind, Koyama continues his attempts to create works, where the shape and surface are oblivious to any hierarchy. In extreme cases, this may mean to completely reverse the creation process itself, or to display the subject in a state where one hesitates to determine whether or not it is realistically possible or not. Naoki Koyama graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts with an MA in Fine Art in 2006 and currently lives and works in London. In 2004 Koyama was awarded Ohashi Prize in Japan.
Private View 3rd July 2008 6.30 - 9.00pm.
The exhibition finishes on 17th July.
